Woke up on this 75th Independence Day of our great country. We were surrounded by a thick mist and magic, mystery and romance was very much in the air. The mountains so close weren’t visible at all. A distinct chill in the air made me shiver.
Getting out of my home I saw this bunch of flowers gently swaying in the breeze. Bathed and cleansed by the overnight rains, they reminded me of a favourite song, originally sung by B J Thomas for Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, an unforgettable movie with Paul Newman and Robert Redford as Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, respectively.
Written by Burt Bacharach and Hal David, the uplifting lyrics describe a fighter who overcomes his troubles and worries by realizing that “it won’t be long ’till happiness steps up to greet me.”
Independence Day, today, to me means a new world of opportunities, options waiting to be explored and dreams to be actualized, a reaffirmed faith and resolve, to achieve some common dreams conceptualised (but not wholly realised) by our ancestors and some personal individual dreams…the foundations for both were laid by centuries and millennia of effort, which we celebrate today. After the most ancient civilization was sought to be subjugated by looters, rapists and murderers masquerading under the garb of religious fanaticism and evangelism, notionally we achieved independence when the occupiers realised they couldn’t rule through their Indian soldiers anymore, thanks to the efforts by Subhashchandra Bose and the Naval uprising.
One such common dream, which can be summarized in Rabindranath Tagore’s words…
“Where the mind is without fear and the head is held high;
Where knowledge is free;
Where the world has not been broken up into fragments by domestic walls;
Where words come out from the depth of truth;
Where tireless striving stretches its arms towards perfection;
Where the clear stream of reason has not lost its way into the dreary desert sand of dead habit;
Where the mind is led forward by thee into ever-widening thought and action–
Into that heaven of freedom, my father, let my country awake…”
Let us , friends, make a pledge reaffirming our resolve in rediscovering our ethos and our nationhood.
Stay healthy, happy and safe. Stay away from the Chinese evil.. as for me, I will enjoy the song more…
