I saw the movie on TV so many years ago. I liked A R Rehman, this was the second musical score after Lagaan that I saw/ heard and loved his distinctive style.
The movie was called (in politically incorrect terms) Bombay and had Manisha Koirala and Arvind R Swamy (who didn’t quite get his share of good roles in Bollywood, despite being so talented and expressive)
It was part of the great director Mani Ratnam’s trilogy. It is the second in his trilogy of films that depict human relationships against a background of Indian politics, starting from Roja in 1992, this one in 1995 and Dil Se in 1998. One good film every 3 years. The film was originally made in Tamizh and dubbed in Hindi, Telugu and Malayalam with the same title.
Mani Ratnam made the movie to highlight a common man caught up in violence not of his own making.
The song has been sung beautifully by Hariharan and Kavitha Krishnamurthy. She sounds more soulful than her other songs and Rehman keeps the song in a deliberately slow tempo with instrumentation and composition more befitting an orchestral symphony. He was already moving out of the confines of local cinema and music and making his oeuvre more acceptable to worldwide audiences, while retaining the Indian ethos. The lyrics were made to order by Mehboob.
I loved Hariharan’s unplugged version as well. The intro is much more sombre and in keeping with my mood today, a day of remembrance for me.

I have a problem with these “remake songs”. We achieved kind of Nirvana listening to the Tamil originals of most ARR song. Thus the Hindi, Telugu versions were kind of sounded alien. Remaking whole songs is very common in South Indian languages. Even “Nile Nile Ambar Par” was from Tamil original of Kalaakaar. Somehow the first version we listened to gets registered. Thus I don’t listen to these Hindi versions. But yes, it’s a magical song.

I agree. The original is always etched on our minds. Tamizh cinema or Malayalam cinema didn’t unfortunately get a national audience.

The famous lyricist swanand kirkire once in an interview told that how difficult it is for the lyricist is to bring the exact emotions of the original lyrics into the translated one
PK mishra and mehboob were largely successful in this mission wen it comes to rahman
Suramai ankhiyo main and aei zindagi gale laga le are couple of the masterpieces of gulzar saab in the said context

Very true. It is probably more difficult to write “made to order” lyrics
