A necessary catharsis

Music is one of the ways by which I experience complex emotions and, while happiness is definitely desirable, the value, purpose, and even meaning in sadness takes some effort to come to terms with. Sure, I like to dance in the rain to a happy tune as much as anyone else, but sometimes one is obliged to deal with stuff that is unpleasant in a forced and cathartic experience.

There is much meaning that can be derived from unhappiness, grief and melancholy. In fact, sad music does not necessarily merely evoke sadness. Researchers have shown that listening to sad music actually can make us feel more relaxed, happier, more romantic, less morose, and immeasurably aids our psyche and brings about emotional rehabilitation.  The casting off of the all enveloping shroud of dank misery and a transition to a state of lesser gloom and doom, feeling less miserable and better adjusted occurs when one listens to sombre, serene, calming music that makes us recover faster. Healing our souls and spirit.

So, in order to help with this uplifting/recovery out of the deep sense of loss after the dark melancholia brought on by the events yesterday, I have a song that I really love.

Against All Odds is a tear jerker, I will confess. I love it for the amazing lyrics, the composition and the rendition.

The lyrics are amazing. https://youtu.be/CkGg1bzfSys

How can I just let you walk away?

Just let you leave without a trace

When I stand here taking every breath, with you, ooh

You’re the only one who really knew me at all

How can you just walk away from me?
When all I can do is watch you leave

‘Cos we’ve shared the laughter and the pain and even shared the tears

You’re the only one who really knew me at all

So take a look at me now, oh there’s just an empty space
And there’s nothin’ left here to remind me
Just the memory of your face

Ooh, take a look at me now, well there’s just an empty space

And you coming back to me is against the odds
And that’s what I’ve got to face

I wish, I could just make you turn around
Turn around and see me cry

There’s so much I need to say to you so many reasons why

You’re the only one who really knew me at all

So take a look at me now, well there’s just an empty space

And there’s nothin’ left here to remind me, just the memory of your face

Now take a look at me now, ‘cos there’s just an empty space

But to wait for you, is all I can do and that’s what I’ve got to face

Take a good look at me now, ‘cos I’ll still be standin’ here

And you coming back to me is against all odds
It’s the chance I’ve gotta take

Take a look at me now

Songwriter Phil Collins

A melody apt for a billion crying hearts for a brave son, snatched away from our midst so cruelly. In a manner most unkind and inexplicable, and therefore extremely difficult even to stomach and even more difficult to digest.

But rise we must, from the deepest abyss of pain and sorrow, get together and move on .

C’est la vie

Stay safe, folks, stay healthy and blessed.

This truly touched me so deep, couldn’t just stop crying… brought back memories of so many near ones gone…. how I wish, against all odds, they would just look back once…..
