Honey, I made some lemonade

As the old witticism goes, when life gives you a lemon, all you can do is make some lemonade.

Imagine a movie being made with arguably one of the best known faces to ever adorn the screen , Madhubala, a wonderful lyricist, Sahir Ludhiyanvi, a talented composer, Roshan and the casting director decided to give you a Pumpkin for the male lead: Bharat Bhushan. With the last part, the movie would have hit the bottom of the sea on its maiden voyage, a la Titanic. However the other saving graces ensured that the movie not only didn’t sink, but actually became a block buster, running for a continuous 100 weeks and more at some places. Barsaat ki raat was indeed, a massive success. https://youtu.be/0_pilWUMOFI

The movie was directed by P L Santoshi and the cast included the vivacious Shyama and Chandrashekhar as well as K N Singh. Ratna who married Bharat Bhushan also figures in the cast. The movie is from a genre that was very common in the 60s: Muslim social films. The movie turned out to be in the top two earners of the year, one of the top twenty earners of the decade and one of the top hundred of all time (when adjusted for inflation).

Roshan made musical history with this score with the longest qawwali in the history of Bollywood. The title track was the chart topper for the year’s honours list on Binaca Geetmala. I love this song by Rafisaab which brings soft romance and a panoply of emotions into the fray with his sublime, unique singing. Truly none like him, ever.

The title track is in two versions: Rafi solo and a duet between Rafisaab and Latadidi. There are a whole bunch of beautiful songs in the movie to go with these. I will surely focus on at least two if not three of them.

Stay blessed, folks as we enter a new calendar year today. Stay safe, happy and healthy. Have an unforgettable weekend.

Bharat Bhushan reflected a Dheerodatta Nayak (not making feelings obvious to the public) throughout his career.
It covered his inability to emote though public didn’t mindAs a contrast to good effect, Madhubala’s inner thoughts came to the surface effortlessly.
Strange, but the combo was a hit with the public. No?
