Dream team

I was reminded of the rarity of this team when I heard this song. Talat Mahmood, the emperor of the blues teaming up with the most original of Bollywood composers: Jaidev (he conjured up all his compositions himself, without ever seeking “Creative inspiration” from other’s work) is a mouth watering prospect for everyone – from the casual listener to the student of Bollywood music to the serious student, to the connoisseur. This song from an early 60s movie which I remember seeing while Dad was posted in Hakimpet is an example of the magic they could create on the very rare occasions they got to work together. The movie was written and produced by Nyaya Sharma who also wrote the lyrics. Chetan Anand directed the movie which has a plot that is a pot pourri of different threads that seem to pop up at random. Dev Anand is paired with Meena Kumari and we are led through a Brownian movement that passes for the storyline. Dev Anand seems to specialise in rescuing damsels in distress from goons, in one instance rescuing a couple with a damsel who must be miffed with her beau and flipped for Dev Anand instead. At one point he rescues Meena Kumari from the same gang of goons that he has done earlier. The second time, however the rescue act goes a bit awry as the lady dies… Kinda like Pappu “rescuing” his moribund party from himself, killing off the organization.

That small inconvenience apart, the movie has an amazing musical score. It has an extremely rare event, too, as the four songs in a male voice are sung by the top 4 singers of all time as solos: Rafisaab, Mukesh, Manna Dey and Talat Mahmood. The only song in a feminine voice is sung by Lata Mangeshkar. https://youtu.be/cTp6GbcmkTM

I love the song starts off dramatically and flows smoothly throughout. A true masterpiece by a genius who was treated rather shabbily by a cutthroat industry. https://youtu.be/GMtPu7kvVTM

Stay safe, folks, the winter seems to be receding and for those interested in numbers, we will go through with the budget speech in the houses of the Parliament while the rest of the social media pundits turn into economists and give profound advice on how the country should be managed to no one in particular. Everyone loves to speak without listening… I am reminded of these words…

… And in the naked light I saw
Ten thousand people, maybe more
People talking without speaking
People hearing without listening
People writing songs that voices never share
No one dared
Disturb the sounds of silence
