A rime in rhyme

Some songs in Bollywood seem to be created with no other purpose than to satisfy the whims of the director/producer/lead pair. The situation for the song sometimes appears contrived and jarring. The “poetry” is often restricted to somehow creating lines with words that rhyme at the end, just to create the qaafiyaa.

Take this song for instance. It was from an early 70s movie, Kal Aaj Aur Kal. The movie marked the acting and directorial debut of Randhir Kapoor, and only the second time that three generations of the Kapoor family appeared together in a single film. (Aawara had Raj Kapoor, Prithviraj Kapoor and Dewan Baseshwarnath Kapoor in his only film appearance). It was a quickie, a relatively low budget (by RK Films standards) film made in the aftermath of R K Films’ Titanic, Mera Naam Joker bombed. The bloated dirigible sank creating huge financial difficulties for RK Films and for Raj Kapoor. The other joker launched in 71 is still afloat (if only just) & still inflicting huge damage to the production house that launched him.

Kal Aaj Aur Kal showcased the romance of the dating couple: Randhir Kapoor and Babita. It was also the last movie for which Shankar Jaikishan scored the music for an RK Film. For some reason, Raj Kapoor blamed SJ for the utterly odious magnum opus (from RK’s viewpoint) that Mera Naam Joker was and ditched them, making scapegoats out of the hapless duo. Exactly as the GOP gets rid of some fall guy after every debacle carefully crafted by the flights of fancy of a drug crazed d(s)on. The amazing part is the Filmfare Awards of the year actually included Manna Dey’s Ae Bhai Jara Dekh Ke Chalo.

Kal aaj aur Kal, despite its modest success, actually salvaged RK Films recoup it’s near mortal losses. The song for all its blase poetry is amazingly written by a wonderful, very accomplished poet, Gopaldas Saksena, “Neeraj”.

The song, a wonderful Kishore Kumar and Asha Bhosle duet, has a striking , shocking pink outfit that Babita wears, matched by neckwear that Randhir dons, perhaps cut out of the remaining cloth.

Randhir Kapoor as director and actor stuck to his métier and didn’t try something extravagant or really path breaking /challenging. Raj Kapoor unfortunately degenerated to making trash, crass voyeuristic soft porn movies just to make money and it is difficult to imagine that the same filmmaker who made Jaagte Raho could make Raam Teri Ganga Maili.

Soft porn was RK films hallmark if you remember Padmini in Jis deemed Ganga and vaijayantimala in Sangam , but on the way content got lost and only porn remained . What else you can expect from zeenat and Mandakini as leads.
