An amazing adaptation for survival is shown by the Banyan Tree. An epiphyte, it starts life in the cracks on trunks or branches of another tree, and soon it’s roots will envelope or “strangle” the other tree as they grow around it. It’s fruit is like every tree of the fig species, a syconium. This syconium offers shelter and nourishment to the insects which reside within, and depends on the insects for pollination as well as seed dispersal. Birds that eat the fruit (“Frugivores”) also help in seed dispersal. This method ensures propagation of the species even in environments that do not encourage the survival of a seed or sapling on the ground.
