A bee flitted around the pretty, delicate inflorescences of a
Vachellia nilotica, (more commonly known as Acacia nilotica,) tree . We refer to it as babul, gum arabic tree, thorn mimosa, Egyptian acacia or thorny acacia. Widely found throughout India, the Middle East and Africa, it gives a gum we have used for hundreds of years. It’s tender shoots have been traditionally used in India to clean teeth and the leaves and flowers very delicate and pretty. Due to its plentiful thorns, it is frequently the host to multiple Weaver bird nests. Once the rains set in, the Baya will start their annual activity in right earnest.
