I heard this ghazal after a long time yesterday driving away into the countryside… Ghalib in his own style conveys the most profound emotions in
Here is the ghazal rendered by Ghulam Ali in his inimitable style. https://youtu.be/0nhu5O2LmyU
Ghalib’s ghazal makes beautiful reading. I will try to give my interpretation in English. Those who are more fluent in the language can feel free to correct me/interpret the verse in their words. Like every good poem, the metaphors used convey different meaning to varying observers, or even to the same reader at different moments in time. There can never be a single explanation to great verse, I honestly believe. Ghalib wrote this ghazal with lots of ash’aar, & the vocal rendition doesn’t contain all of them, those that are included are marked in block.
An amazing piece of verse from an eternal poetic genius. Let’s look at what it meant to me.
. When one has given one’s heart away, why would one lament the loss and voice one’s pain and distress? (नवा-संज-ए-फ़ुग़ाँ : the one who cries, laments, complains )
.
. When one has lost one’s heart in the chest (body) –when one has lost it- then why must there be a tongue in the mouth (to cry and lament the loss) .
.
. If you’ve given your heart away of your own volition, you shouldn’t cry or grieve over the perceived loss. Having fallen in love, you can’t cry or grieve over the loss, which is very much the other side of the coin)
. She won’t change her habit, (Urdu poetry is left gender neutral, I am assigning the feminine gender as the poet is Ghalib) why should I change my behaviour?
.
. Should I become light headed and ask her “Why are you so arrogant with me?”. (The poet is miffed at the beloved’s haughty temperament and says since she won’t change her temperament, so why should I give up my self respect and ask her for an explanation)
.
. The one who destroys my unhappiness has insulted me, and in doing so, has reduced my love to a heap of ashes.
.
. The one who doesn’t have strength or courage during my hour of grief doesn’t deserve to be my confidante.
.
. What is this loyalty? What is this form of love? If my breaking my head is to be a measure of my love (for you)
.
.
. Then, o stone hearted one, why does it have to be done on a stone at your doorstep/threshold? I may as well do it on any other stone and vent my pain.
.
.
. Albeit I am in a prison/cage, (क़फ़स) be not afraid of telling me the state of my garden, my dear friend,
.
. Why should my nest be the one to be destroyed when lightning struck yesterday?
.
.
. You can always say “Am I not in your heart?”, but tell me this one aspect
.
. If you’re the only one in my heart why are you hidden from my eyes?
. Wrong were the complaints about the desires of the heart, but see whose fault/crime is it?
.
. If you do not pull yourself away from me, why would there be a struggle, a tug of war between us
. Isnt this disaster/calamity enough to lay waste a man’s abode?
. If you make friends with someone, why should the sky be his enemy?
.
. If this has to be a test or a trial, what would torture/torment/harassment be like, I wonder…
.
. If you’re now loyal to my enemy, why are you testing me?
. You said “why should there be an insult (for me) if you were to meet the other?”
. You speak correctly, you speak the truth, pray say it again so that “why should it be so?” The lover who is feeling hurt and insulted at the beloved seeing the other, mocks sarcastically and asks the beloved to examine her rationale once more.
.
. What objective would you hope to achieve by these taunts, O Ghalib?
.
. If you keep on uttering unkind words towards her, why then would she oblige you (with her grace and love).
An amazing ghazal rendered in such a straightforward manner by Ghulam Ali Sahab totally bereft of his usual showboating and playing to the gallery. I can well imagine the courtesan that Ghalib was very much in love with being the subject of this set of beautiful couplets. The taal, sarangi and harmonium paint the picture of a courtesan dancing in a mehfil while Ghalib , rather miffed at her for being friendly/obliging towards the other (Ghalib’s perceived rival for the attention and love) mouths this litany of complaints.
I can’t just go away without another rendition of this beauty. https://youtu.be/0nhu5O2LmyU
In the TV Serial Mirza Ghalib, Jagjit Singh brought about a role reversal and made Chitra Singh sing this, an interesting turn of the gender equation, I thought. https://youtu.be/w4uhuldVCU8
It doesn’t quite sound the same as the embellishments to the composition take away a bit from the impact.
Have a wonderful day ahead, folks. A longish walk in natural surroundings, an unruly, naughty canine full of joie de vivre and mischief meant I didn’t get enough me time first up in the day. Stay happy, healthy and blessed.

This is a true masterpiece. I had heard it a few times before, but it is an gesture on the part of Doctor Sahib to share it. Aap ne purani yaden taza ker do. Shookriyaji. Your interpretation is spot on. Although my knowledge of the language is extremely limited, I can comfortably authenticate your interpretation. Great work Doctor Sahib.
