A fond desire

I heard this melodious entreaty while driving to the hospital early today. It was cooler today after many a day. The winter had all but disappeared for the last 10 days. This is one of my dad’s favourite ghazals.

Jagjit Singh’s vocals based on the wonderful Yaman Kalyan raag, weave a magical web that entrap a listener and ensure a beatific and calming happy state of the mind and the soul. शोला हूँ भड़कने की गुज़ारिश नहीं करता

शोला हूँ भड़कने की गुज़ारिश नहीं करता
सच मूँह से निकल जाता है कोशिश नहीं करता

गिरती हुई दीवार का हमदर्द हूँ लेकिन
चढ़ते हुए सूरज की परस्तिश नहीं करता

(परस्तिश = पूजा, आराधना)

माथे के पसीने की महक आये ना जिस से
वो ख़ून मेरे जिस्म में गर्दिश नहीं करता

(गर्दिश = घुमाव, चक्कर)

हम्दर्दी-ए-अहबाब से डरता हूँ ‘मुज़फ़्फ़र’
मैं ज़ख़्म तो रखता हूँ नुमाइश नहीं करता

(अहबाब = स्वजन, दोस्त, मित्र), (हम्दर्दी-ए-अहबाब =  दोस्तों की सहानुभूति), (नुमाइश = दिखावट, प्रदर्शन, दिखावा)

लहरों से लड़ा करता हूँ दरिया में उतर के
साहिल पे खड़े हो के मैं साज़िश नहीं करता

मरने कि दुआ, जीने की ख़्वाहिश नहीं करता

A truly wonderful verse, simple words strung together so beautifully, embellished with a straightforward melody sans cacophonous instrumentation and rendered so divinely by our favourite singer. Dad would listen to Jagjitji for hours together. The flute, an occasional guitar and santoor, and a simple tabla create enchanting magic.
