I saw this movie one Saturday evening when in the Resident Medical Officer’s quarters in Mumbai. We would rent a stack of videotapes that we would binge watch late into the night. I was “on call” (which means theoretically always being available for any unforeseen crisis in the wards) and bored of reading weighty tomes for my MD, which were better suited for weight lifting and which we read virtually on the pain of death. The song is wonderfully sung by Andy Williams (this version) and originally appeared in an eponymous movie made in the mid 50s. “Love is a many splendored thing”. The song itself won the Oscar for Best Original Song. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=98pqW8h-sn4
The song was written by Sammy Fain and Paul Francis Webster and was performed as an instrumental version at the beginning and sung by a chorus at the end. Alfred Newman won the oscar for Best Original Score.
Love is a many splendored thing
It’s the April rose that only grows in the early Spring
Love is nature’s way of giving a reason to be living
The golden crown that makes a man a king
Once on a high and windy hill, In the morning mist
Two lovers kissed and the world stood still
Then your fingers touched my silent heart and taught it how to sing
Yes, true love’s a many splendored thing
Love is a many splendored thing
It’s the April rose that only grows in the early Spring
Love is nature’s way of giving a reason to be living
The golden crown that makes a man a king
Once on a high and windy hill, In the morning mist
Two lovers kissed and the world stood still
Then your fingers touched my silent heart and taught it how to sing
Yes, true love’s a many splendored thing……
A wonderful song that reminds me of Sabira Merchant. She was the gracious host on one of the programs on Mumbai DD, “What’s the Good Word” where I first cut my Television teeth.
I love this version by Engelbert Humperdinck as well. He brings a little more intimacy into his singing. Check his singing out. https://youtu.be/xGyVE_TT97A
Enjoy both versions (and more because so many have covered this timeless classic). Have a great day. Springs and balloons do take up my time, sometimes changing my schedule. Have a wonderful day ahead

It is a wonderful song, very romantic. Andy William is softer, whereas Engelbert is full throated. Both are excellent. Also liked the accompaniments, very well designed, in tune with the mood. I also like the song by Nat King Cole, charming. Such golden voices and superb songs and of course singing are missing today.
