Inspired? Methinks not quite…

I remember seeing this movie on one of the movie shows on TV. It paired Amol Palekar with Tina Munim , one of Dev Anand’s protégés.

Amol Palekar, having studied Fine arts in J J School of Art,  started life in Bank of India, but was always more passionate about theatre, and from there, he was spotted by Satyadev Dubey when the latter made the Marathi film Shantata! Court Chalu aahe, the movie that started parallel cinema in Marathi. Basu Chatterjee then cast him for Rajanigandha and also in Chhoti Si Baat. He even acted and later directed many a memorable movie in Marathi, Hindi and even one in English.

Tina Munim started her film career with Des pardes. We had seen that movie with a hundred and fifty classmates who were interested in wreaking mayhem in the theater hall with a parallel set of dialogues. Baton Baton Mein was a very enjoyable movie. Filmed on Pearl Padamsee‘s son, Ranjeet Choudhary, it is a wonderful duet between Amit Kumar and Asha Bhosle. The lyrics by Yogesh Gaud have a wonderful singalong quality, too.

When I first heard this song, I realized it was based on an American US Civil War marching song. This was later adapted by the Irish Rovers and made into a song Johnny I hardly knew ye. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OkpiwHo0Po0

Sadly the Irish Song seems to have been c/p’d to make the Hindi song.
