A wonderful, if straightforward ghazal that’s relatively easy to understand.
उम्र जल्वों में बसर हो ये ज़रूरी तो नहीं
खामोश गाझीपुरी
उम्र जल्वों में बसर हो ये ज़रूरी तो नहीं
हर शब-ए-ग़म की सहर हो ये ज़रूरी तो नहीं
चश्म-ए-साक़ी से पियो या लब-ए-साग़र से पियो
बे-ख़ुदी आठों पहर हो ये ज़रूरी तो नहीं
नींद तो दर्द के बिस्तर पे भी आ सकती है
उन की आग़ोश में सर हो ये ज़रूरी तो नहीं
शैख़ करता तो है मस्जिद में ख़ुदा को सज्दे
उस के सज्दों में असर हो ये ज़रूरी तो नहीं
सब की नज़रों में हो साक़ी ये ज़रूरी है मगर
सब पे साक़ी की नज़र हो ये ज़रूरी तो नहीं
मय-कशी के लिए ख़ामोश भरी महफ़िल में
सिर्फ़ ख़य्याम का घर हो ये ज़रूरी तो नहीं
I will attempt to give you one of my interpretations of the ghazal in the form it is most frequently rendered. You’ll find other versions with altered (equally beautiful) lyrics.
उम्र जल्वों में बसर हो ये ज़रूरी तो नहीं
हर शब-ए-ग़म की सहर हो ये ज़रूरी तो नहीं
It isn’t necessary that life is spent in a series of glamorous events, every night of sadness need not end in a morning (of happiness)
चश्म-ए-साक़ी से पियो या लब-ए-साग़र से पियो
बे-ख़ुदी आठों पहर हो ये ज़रूरी तो नहीं
You might get drunk sipping from the eyes or the lips of the barmaid, but it is not necessary to be intoxicated all day long.
नींद तो दर्द के बिस्तर पे भी आ सकती है
उन की आग़ोश में सर हो ये ज़रूरी तो नहीं
One can fall asleep in a bed of suffering and pain, it isn’t essential to rest one’s head on the lap of one’s beloved
शैख़ करता तो है मस्जिद में ख़ुदा को सज्दे
उस के सज्दों में असर हो ये ज़रूरी तो नहीं
The priest always prays to God in the mosque, but it isn’t essential that his prayers be fruitfully answered.
सब की नज़रों में हो साक़ी ये ज़रूरी है मगर
सब पे साक़ी की नज़र हो ये ज़रूरी तो नहीं
It is always the case (in a bar) that everyone looks at the barmaid (can be male, too: saqi refers to the person who serves wine/liquor and is a gender neutral word and symbolizes the object of desire) in a bar, but it isn’t essential that s/he looks at everyone.
मय-कशी के लिए ख़ामोश भरी महफ़िल में
सिर्फ़ ख़य्याम का घर हो ये ज़रूरी तो नहीं
One can drink quietly (Khamosh is the poet’s nom-de-plume as well) in a crowded gathering, it isn’t essential to visit Khayyam’s home every time to drink. (Khayyam refers to the famous Farsi poet who has written lots of verses describing symbolizing wine and alcoholism)
