Laxmikant Pyarelal Romantic Duets

Hopelessly in love with you..

I heard the song after many weeks on the morning Golden oldies program. A fantastic romantic duet with Kishore Kumar and Asha Bhosle singing for the on-screen pair of Kishore Kumar and Ameeta. The movie, Hum Sab Ustad Hain made and directed by the comedian of the 50s and 60s, Maruti, inexplicably bombed, bankrupting him. The movie actually had all the ingredients needed to do well, but didn’t with disastrous consequences for the poor guy. The strongest suit in the pack was the frothy set of songs.

Asad Bhopali and Laxmikant Pyarelal gave a fantastic, memorable score. The lyricist was thought of highly by others including Gulzar but somehow never got his due, and got very few projects from the biggest production houses. Look at this wonderful song that makes me feel like a teenager all over again. https://youtu.be/XC-6ttNA_i0

Kishore Kumar was a natural when it came to acting as well as singing, and it shows. He had more emotive skills than about 22 (maybe 23) males of his generation who were let loose on an entertainment starved set of generations. Male leads of the time thought it was strictly infra dig to let the slightest flicker of emotion ever cross their passably good faces, even in the passing, and they would not even try to attempt. Kishore da on the other hand has a rich panoply of emotions to show the camera, which had a long love affair as did the microphone. Sadly he had to largely sacrifice his acting career to further his singing. Other male leads wouldn’t take him as a playback singer till he remained active in the acting domain. Ameeta, who was (re)launched with much fanfare by Tolaram Jalan of Filmistan (who was very much taken up by her beauty), thru a special purpose vehicle, Tumsa Nahin Dekha, never reaped the benefits of the box office success of the movie (which actually provided a rebirth of, and a lifeline of sorts, to the floundering career of Shamsher Raj Kapoor, aka Shammi Kapoor) and she was sadly reduced to doing movies with lesser banners and later, even bit roles.

A very catchy melody: a wonderful set of lyrics that have an inherent rhythmicity (probably made to order), a great composition and wonderful singing by both Kishoreda and Asha Bhosle means that the recipe for a wonderful romantic duet is just right.

Have a wonderful day ahead, folks. Stay healthy and happy.
