A Carpenter Bee buzzed around the garden, very busily. Flitting from flower to flower, it entered the corolla on every flower in the unending symbiotic search for nectar, pollinating them while satisfying it’s own thirst. Xylocopa latipes, the tropical carpenter bee, is a species of carpenter bee widely dispersed throughout India up to Southeast Asia. As its name suggests, this bee inhabits forests in warm tropical climates and constructs nests by burrowing into wood.

The flower is on a perennially flowering vine that grows on the hedge. Thunbergia grandiflora is an evergreen vine in the family Acanthaceae. It is native to China, India, Nepal, Bangladesh, Indochina and Myanmar and widely naturalised elsewhere. Common names include Bengal clockvine, Bengal trumpet, blue skyflower, blue thunbergia, blue trumpetvine, clockvine, skyflower and skyvine

We were shocked to see this gigantic specimen in our neighbourhood garden while on our walk. Measuring more than 20 cm in length, it is easily the largest snail I’ve seen in India. This is the Giant African Snail
.
Lissachatina fulica is a species of large land snail that belongs in the subfamily Achatininae of the family Achatinidae.

It is also known as the Giant African land snail. It shares the common name “giant African snail” with other species of snails such as Achatina achatina and Archachatina marginata.

This snail species has been considered a significant cause of pest issues around the world. Internationally, it is the most frequently occurring invasive species of snail. It not just destroys and displaces native snail species, it spreads disease amongst humans as well. It is considered one of the world’s top 100 pests.

A wonderful cityscape of Shimla taken in the Golden Hour, sent by a dear friend Shri Anoop Sood spurred these thoughts. In large urban areas we eke our existences cloaked in faceless anonymity. We might be headed in the same direction without any shared purpose, and in the last few years, each person lost in a personal device somewhat paradoxically called a smartphone, one that has led to a greater dumbing down of basic intellect of people.

The indomitable will to live and nurture for the benefit of others is awe-inspiring. A tree which man tried to destroy sprung to life and bore a large number of fruit to nourish the very hands that sought to chop it out of existence.

Birding is a pleasant and undoubtedly an extremely pleasurable hobby, one that always enriches my soul and gives unending happiness.
.
This is a chestnut-tailed starling (Sturnia malabarica), also called grey-headed starling and grey-headed myna.  It is a resident or partially migratory species found in wooded habitats all throughout India and through Southeast Asia.

The species name is after the distribution of a former subspecies in Malabar.

While the chestnut-tailed starling is a winter visitor to peninsular India, the closely related resident breeding population with a white head is now treated as a full species, and is called the Malabar Starling (Sturnia blythii).

The intoxicating fragrance of the various varieties of Jasmine is truly heady and invigorating. This is the Arabic Jasmine, aka मदनबाण in Marathi. Tonic for the soul, truly and no better sight than the plant with scores of flowers blooming.

The beauty of being together is reinforced by an inflorescence of the tiny but beautiful trailing Lantana flowers.
.

Lantana montevidensis is a species of Lantana known by many common names, such as: trailing lantanaweeping lantanacreeping lantanasmall lantanapurple lantana or trailing shrubverbena. Originally from South America, they are very common in India. Lantana montevidensis is a small strongly scented flowering  shrub with oval-shaped green leaves. With support it has a climbing “vine” form, when on edge a trailing form, and on the flat a groundcover form.

The inflorescence is a circular head of several purple to lavender to white funnel-shaped flowers with lobed corollas each nearly a centimeter wide. A beautiful plant in the garden

Spathiphyllum wallisii, commonly known as peace lily, white sails, or spathe flower is a very popular indoor house plant of the family Araceae. The genus name means “spathe-leaf“, and the specific epithet is named after Gustav Wallis, the German plant collector.

It is a herbaceous perennial which produces flowers in the typical aroid structure: a densely crowded inflorescence called a spadix is subtended by one large bract called a spathe (occasionally two spathes are produced, with the upper spathe smaller). The spadix is generally cream or ivory when young, and turns green with age; the spathe is generally white or white with green nerves distally from the margin, turning green with age. Leaves are basal, glossy and somewhat deeply veined, ovate and acuminate. The petioles are long and the leaves arch gracefully. The plant produces offsets at the base and in time becomes a dense clump.

This unusual but strikingly beautiful flower has a fragrance that helps locate the tree from a distance.
.
Couroupita guianensis is planted as an ornamental plant for its showy, scented flowers, and as a botanical specimen for its interesting fruit. The fruit is edible but has a strong, unpleasant odour. The tree is called the Cannonball tree and has come to India from Central and South America. It has been used medicinally as well. Sighting a tree from afar is a treat to the eyes as the tall, thick trunk is full of hundreds of these flowers.
