Nature Pure joy

बस यूँही….

.
.
A guileless face peered at me with curiosity from the brush,
.
An intriguing mixture of purity, inquisitiveness and joy while being on guard to flee at the slightest sign of hostility, ears perked to catch the slightest sound..
.
I wonder what kind of human would want to harm such a beautiful, innocent creation of the Supreme being.

बस यूँही…..

.
.
The Sun set behind the mountain ridge, it has moved much to the north compared to its southerly position a few months ago. I am able to appreciate the उत्तरायण / दक्षिणायन much better after frequently visiting the wide open spaces in the countryside.
.
I wonder what secrets would the all observing Sun gather from the world He passes over and takes with Him when he retires for the night…..

.
.
The sunrise on the river.
.
This was the beautiful sight which filled my senses and soul with so much joy and positivity.
.
Energised I will go about my work.
.
I am thankful to the Supreme One for giving me an opportunity to witness the daily recurring miracle.
.
I was reminded of a few lines I had read aeons ago: Robert Louis Stevenson’s ‘Looking-Glass River
.
.
While writing Treasure Island and Jekyll and Hyde, Robert Louis Stevenson  also wrote the perennially popular A Child’s Garden of Verses.
.
This is a lovely poem from this collection.
.
Looking-Glass River
.
.
Smooth it glides upon its travel,
Here a wimple, there a gleam –
O the clean gravel!
O the smooth stream!
.
.
Sailing blossoms, silver fishes,
Pave pools as clear as air –
How a child wishes
To live down there!
.
.
We can see our coloured faces
Floating on the shaken pool
Down in cool places,
Dim and very cool;
.
.

Till a wind or water wrinkle,
Dipping marten, plumping trout,
Spreads in a twinkle
And blots all out.
.
.
See the rings pursue each other;
All below grows black as night,
Just as if mother
Had blown out the light!
.
.
Patience, children, just a minute –
See the spreading circles die;
The stream and all in it
Will clear by-and-by.

The mountain ridge stood silently, the peaks standing in unison , looking down at me somewhat bemused by my visiting them yet again. Like us, Choco loves being outdoors too.
.
A sense of freedom, of peace, of soaking in the silence, barring the rustling of the leaves, the chirping of the birds, the whistling of the breeze….
.
Aah! That’s Nirvana….. You’re one with the Supreme being without having to shed your body to do it.

The summer heat is well and truly on and the various varieties of fragrant flowers are in full bloom. Stepping out into the corner of the garden where these are located is a heady, intoxicating, recurrent pleasurable experience we are fortunate to experience.
.
We have multiple types of Jasmine in our garden at home, each with its distinct, light fragrance. These are some that were plucked yesterday as an offering for the daily Pooja. The majority are मदनबाण but a few flowers in the left lower corner are मोगरा. The European botanists didn’t realize there were more than 200 distinct varieties when they clubbed all of them under an umbrella term, “Jasmine”

The hornbill turned up on its favourite perch, the branch of the Gulmohar next to us. It stared at me as if to tell me something. Fortunately it wasn’t camera shy today and allowed some photographs. Some days it takes off at the glint of the lens.
.
The Indian Grey Hornbill is a common bird in India, mainly arboreal and is often seen in pairs. It has grey feathers all over the body with a light grey or dull white belly. The horn is black or dark grey with a casque extending to the point of curvature of the horn. It is one of the few hornbill species found in urban areas in many cities where they are able to make use of large trees in avenues.
.
The upper parts are greyish brown and there is a slight trace of a pale supercilium. The ear coverts are darker. The flight feathers of the wing are dark brown with a whitish tip. The tail has a white tip and a dark subterminal band.
.
They have a red iris and the eyelids have eyelashes. The casque is short and pointed.
.
.
The male has a larger casque on a dark bill, and the culmen and lower mandible are yellowish.
.
The bare skin around the eye is dark in the male, but sometimes pale reddish in females. The female has a more yellowish bill with black on the basal half and on the casque.
.
The juveniles lack the casque, and the bare skin around the eye is dull orange.
.
I was reminded of a poem I’d read a few days ago.

“Look at you”

By Megan Booysen

.
Look at you
Looking at me too
.
Look at you
Love,
Beautiful and true
.
Look at you
with love
Radiant and pure
.
Look at you
in love
Begging for the cure
.
Look at you
broken
Look at you
bent
.
The key to love is not in breaking,
But in how we look again.

Nature is infinitely more beautiful than any artist’s or photographer’s imagination or depiction.
.
I feel whatever glimpses we are fortunate to get or renditions we do give through our images show but a fraction of reality.
.
I’ve been extremely blessed to have friends like Shrinivas Khedkar (who sent this amazing image which is clearly a human artist at work trying to show what the Supreme one can- & does- create vistas of indescribable beauty).

The black kite sat in the distance, perched on an arch on the metro line. It looked around for possible prey.
.
The black kite (Milvus migrans) is a medium-sized predatory bird from the  family Accipitridae, which also includes many other diurnal predators.
.
Said to be the world’s most abundant species of Accipitridae. Current global population estimates run up to 6 million individuals.
.
It has a huge geographic footprint, extending from Australia, across Asia, and into entire Subsaharan Africa and Europe. Unlike others of the group, black kites are opportunistic hunters and are more likely to scavenge. They spend much time soaring and gliding in thermals in search of food. Their angled wing and distinctive forked tail make them easy to identify. They are also extremely vocal and possess a shrill, loud whinnying call.

I’ve always found saplings or bulbs gifted to us tend to thrive and bloom more than the ones we procured from the nursery.
.
This flower is from an Amaryllis bulb that was given a few months ago by a dear family friend and has now burst forth with a stunning bloom of a stunning shade of red.
.
.
Amaryllis is the only genus in the subtribe Amaryllidinae (tribe Amaryllideae).
.

It is a small genus of flowering bulbs, with two species.
.
.
The better known of the two, Amaryllis belladonna, is a native of the Western Cape region of South Africa.
.
.
Plants of the genus Amaryllis are known as belladonna lily, Jersey lily, naked lady, amarillo, Easter lily in Southern Australia or, in South Africa, March lily due to its propensity to flower around March.

. This is one of numerous genera with the common name ‘lily’ due to their flower shape and growth habit. However, they are only distantly related to the true lily, Lilium. In the Victorian language of flowers, Amaryllis meanslove, beauty, and determination”, and can also represent hope and achievement.
