बस यूँही…….

.
.
Yet another evening, yet another sunset. The setting sun while ending the day’s journey in a thick cloud bank at the horizon sent out an aura of hope, a message to #Never_Give_Up.
.
A poem published nearly 230 years ago came to mind.
.
.

Hope is the Thing with Feathers
Emily Dickinson
.
“Hope” is the thing with feathers –
That perches in the soul –
And sings the tune without the words – And never stops – at all –
.
And sweetest – in the Gale – is heard – And sore must be the storm –
That could abash the little Bird
That kept so many warm –
.
I’ve heard it in the chillest land –
And on the strangest Sea –
Yet – never – in Extremity,
It asked a crumb – of me.

Alone in a crowd

I’ve always admired Jagjit Singh. He could see the seed of a great idea in a poem from a well known (or even lesser known) poet and weave a magical web with his creative genius around it. His style of composition was always different as was his divine singing. He had trained in Hindustani Classical music but he moved away beyond those roots and heritage and expressed himself in a manner few others had thought would be possible. Little wonder he sold more albums on his own name than any other artiste in India, Bollywood music included.

Look at this amazing nazm. Although he was the foremost ghazal singer from India, he did dabble in other poetic forms as well, including free verse. The last form being made into outstanding songs sets apart the boys from the men. I therefore respect Pancham , Jagjit Singh And Hridaynath Mangeshkar so much more than others. Their unique creative genius allowed them to convert the oddest of verse into immortal melodious memories that will last me a lifetime. https://youtu.be/4StSMuVyyBo

These touching lines were crafted by Javed Akhtar who should have stuck to being a wonderful poet. I love the way a picture is painted in my mind’s eye by the lines. I also love Jagjit Singh builds the composition to a crescendo. Just wondrous, and enthralling. Who else could have cast a divine, enchanting magical spell from these lines expedite except Jagjit Singh? I honestly doubt.

I love the way he plays with the audience’s emotions with his play on हम कहाँ जायेंगे…. https://youtu.be/83jT0JFZso8

Stay safe, folks. Stay happy and healthy. Enjoy the day. The monsoon picks up momentum again. The twist in the tail might be significant, take care

The sun set in the dense clouds which massed in the skies, much above the horizon. It made for an interesting spectacle. The warm glow of the sun suffusing the skies in hues of molten gold, the dark dense clouds acquiring a luminous edge.

Dealing with it as best as one can…

I started the day at 2 am. Just one of those days in a physician’s life. And one who dreamt of becoming one, and went on to get into the high risk area of Adult Interventional Cardiology (which is all about NOW! Fix the plumbing, manage the wiring and keep the pump going at all costs for as long as you possibly can…. )

And all the while you’ve to take care that you don’t cross to the other side of the table, knowing that many of your colleagues, some much younger than you needed to fix their plumbing, leaky faucets, clogged pipes, and had their wiring redone because it had short circuited. Too many lives lost, too many wings clipped in an all consuming worship of Mammon rather than pursuing Apollo or Hygieia or Asclepius by themselves. It’s never heartening to know that a handsome and jovial senior in your days of residency who had landed up in a vegetative state from anoxic brain damage has finally crossed the river Styx in Charon’s craft.

Many people use different routes to deal with stress: it is pointless staying in denial. It isn’t a matter of living a stress free life, that’s pretty much a utopian concept in the world that we find ourselves moored in, it’s only about learning how best we can deal with it. Adaptation is the operant term really.

And as has been my wont in such situations, I turned to music. Played the clip out loud a few times in a continuous loop while I was pedalling furiously on my trusted exerbike. Three quarters of an hour, Three quarters of a litre of sweat, guzzling a bottle of water, a hot shower and multiple iterations of the melody, and I was almost a distilled and refined version of Peter Parker, Clark Kent and Bruce Wayne rolled into one. The music filled the microcosm I’d built around myself. The number took me back some three decades when life was simpler (it’s funny how everyone always finds it simpler only in hindsight, and almost never looking forward). The satellite TV had just started beaming on India almost concurrently with Desert Storm started by George H W Bush (Senior) in response to Kuwait being run over by Saddam’s (Largely American Armed and trained) Army. That was the ideal Made for TV military operation that was seen live on CNN in scores of millions of homes across the globe. That was also the time MTV made its appearance on the idiot box. That led to a search of the channel for Indian performers. That’s where I first met this shaggy haired, bike riding amazing singer whose numbers would appear periodically on the channel. His first number I ever saw/heard was Nights on Fire and this is from the same album. Aptly named for the time I played it today. https://youtu.be/Z6Q6ryADBe0

It was fortuitous that I actually got to meet the guy a few years ago and despite the inevitable appearance of salt in his mop, his voice remains unchanged. I loved the video clip made for the song, very imaginatively conceived and shot, too.

The song has been written by Gary himself and I am definitely going to ask him if he has allowed any other singers to cover his songs publicly. Fantastic lyrics that paint a picture, tell a story..

… In the dark he sits and wonders
How far can she really be
In the night he hears a calling
Its the sound of liberty
Though she’s gone she’s out there somewhere
While he waits on bended knee
Never taking what she offers
Something that he just couldn’t see
The other side of dawn

… This can never be the same
After the time and nights he spends
Hearing distant sounds of thunder
Sounds that ring inside his head
The other side of dawn
Here comes the other side of dawn

… And he runs from the nights insecurity
He runs from the days reality
He feels so inspired
In the clear moonlight
He sees the whole world
Through the poet’s eye
The other side of dawn
The other side of dawn

… Will this days and nights of whispers
Find him in his own release
Somewhere he just stops to wonder
This feeling that isn’t free
And the chains that binds his thoughts
Allow him only so much way
Its something the poet would have thought
As the price he has to pay

… The other side of dawn
Here comes the other side of dawn

… And he runs from the nights insecurity
He runs from the days reality
He feels so inspired
In the clear moonlight
He sees the whole world
Through the poet’s eye
The other side of dawn
The other side of dawn

… And he runs from the nights insecurity
He runs from the days reality
He feels so inspired
In the clear moonlight
He sees the whole world
Through the poet’s eye
The other side of dawn
The other side of dawn

… And he runs from the nights insecurity
He runs from the days reality
He feels so inspired
In the clear moonlight
He sees the whole world
Through the poet’s eye
The other side of dawn
The other side of dawn

So it is that The other side of dawn recharged my soul and reenergized my drooping shoulders. https://youtu.be/pt6ZzUcGgrk

Seek your own mojo, folks, and find what works best for you. I have definitely found mine. Thanks Gary, for the timely pick-me-up to my aching bones. Hope to see you soon

PS. I was so happy Gary helped me correct a mistake in the transcript of the lyrics which I noticed hearing the song. I had picked up the lyrics from a usually trustworthy site. Thanks a bunch, Gary. See you soon

बस यूँही……

The skies were suffused for a fleeting moment with an unreal celestial magical show just after sunset. I could feel the leash I once held so often tug at my hand insistently as my furry son grew impatient at my standing still admiring His painting skills. I could sense his presence, after all I was proximate to his forever resting place. He had, as was his habit, moved on ahead and seemed to stop and look back to see if I would follow him, which I definitely will, another day.

I was reminded of this sublime piece of verse:

Walking into a golden sky

By D I Harrison

Walking into a golden sky

When I start and walk alone,

Rain, dark storms folding about me,

When I need  a person – you –

And you were just here,

Now departed,

I shall never walk alone,

For you are here, but just now

You’re at a different here,

And yet here the silver lark’s song is heard

(by us both).

The Sun, undoubtedly tired from its daily trudge across the heavens, seemed happy to sink at the horizon for a well deserved rest for the night. It left behind a sky full of molten gold as a lone shrub silhouetted against it’s bright body bid it adieu….
.
.
While I, an awestruck spectator watching in wordless wonder, reached for a device to capture the moment in an expression of Carpe diem.

The beauty of each Sunset is truly ephemeral, other wordly and unforgettable despite its evanescence.
.
The interplay between the ever changing hues and the fading light from a sun that has set for a well deserved rest at night always fascinates me. I feel blessed God granted me the privilege to be alive to witness the recurring miracle unfold in front of my eyes every single time.

Each sunset weaves a different story, the multihued evanescent beauty that unfolds in the skies is truly breathtaking and awe-inspiring. No two moments are alike in any sunset, the panoply of ever changing colours so mind boggling. Impossible to capture the beauty through a lens…
.
I was reminded of a poem I had read while in school when I saw this Sunset in the hills.
.

Out of the Sunset’s Red
by William Stanley Braithwaite

Out of the sunset’s red
Into the blushing sea,
The winds of day drop dead
And dreams come home to me. —
The sea is still,— and apart
Is a stillness in my heart.
The night comes up the beach,
The dark steals over all,
Though silence has no speech
I hear the sea-dreams call
To my heart; — and in reply
It answers with a sigh.

Sunset was at 7:18 pm on Saturday. The twilight lasted an hour after that. The skies were suffused with brilliant, pleasing, enchanting, enthralling evanescent hues that had me transfixed to the spot, awestruck by the amazing celestial spectacle.
.
What can one day about the divine painter but express gratitude at being allowed to be a mute witness. This was close to 8 pm.
