Elegiac lamentation….

I saw this movie in Hakimpet when Dad was posted there after the 62 war, which we had spent in Tezpur. We loved the period of calm between the two wars, as 65 was spent in Adampur, close to Jalandhar. Being in war zones was immensely educative to me and the narrow parochial thinking of civvie street is by and large exorcised from your system once you are part of a Serviceman’s family.

You never think of region, religion or the bane of our society, caste. The bonds built in Hakimpet continue to be strong. Our family friend’s younger son (like a younger brother to me, really) is now the Vice Chief of Naval Staff. We have all been immensely proud of his progress. The movie Lal Quila was a somewhat romanticised and fictionalised distory of the 1857 War of Independence, which led to the externment /banishing of Bahadurshah Zafar, the notional last ruler of the decadent Moghuls.

The song depicts the thoughts of the ageing former monarch as he was externed to faraway Yangon (then Rangoon) in Myanmar (then Burma). Although he was in essence a titular Emperor, as the “Mughal Empire” by then existed only in name and his authority was limited only to the walled city of Old Delhi. More like the Sarpanch of a village. Born Mirza Abu Zafar Siraj-ud-din Muhammad and was the twentieth and last member of the Moghuls in India. He took the title Bahadurshah when he took the “throne”. He is more famous by his poetic title , Bahadurshah Zafar.

Yet he thought of his old fiefdom with fondness thinking of what might have been.

The amazing music is by S N Tripathi, with amazing singing by the great Rafisaab. No one else could manage to sing so well with such minimal instrumentation. The movie directed by Nanabhai Bhatt and had P. Jairaj and Nirupa Roy in the lead. The most poignant lines are “itna to badnaseeb Zafar, dafn ke liye, do gaz zameen bhi na mili, koo-e-yaar mein” …

Take care, folks, stay safe and have fun. Enjoy the Sunday.
