The song of Argentina? Maybe….

The finale to the nearly month long quadrennial celebration of the beautiful game was truly befitting a tournament conducted in a tiny patch of land not known for anything except exporting oil and supporting terrorist groups. France, seeking to be the first team to retain it’s title for decades was pipped to the ribbon by a team which actually shockingly lost its opening match to Saudi Arabia but made amends after that and got it’s act together. France woke up after around 80 minutes of utter , near total domination by the La Albiceleste. Led by a diminutive powerhouse of a captain who wasn’t born when the team won the trophy the last time in Mexico (remember the infamous “Hand of God”?), the team quickly picked itself up from the shocker of the first match and kicked into top gear soon. It was remarkable that the Gallant Gauls didn’t give up despite the dominant La Albiceleste and Mbappe showed exactly why he is rated so highly. For the first 120 minutes, it was he who dragged back his country into contention every time they fell back, from the throes of defeat. https://youtu.be/Sgm0HkCduYk

The end result did justice to the indomitable spirit of the South American gauchos who rode their luck with equal measures of skill and fortitude. The song is from a 50s movie, Lajwanti which saw a wonderful acting duel between Balraj Sahni and Nargis. The movie had great music by Sachindev Burmanda and was directed by Narinder Suri. All songs except one solo by Geeta Dutt and one duet which had Manna Dey were by Asha Bhosle.

A wonderful movie which makes some very relevant points that I saw one Sunday evening on DD Mumbai. It was not just entered at the Cannes Film Festival but also was nominated for the Palme d’Or. Do watch it if you’ve not done it, definitely worth it.

Have a great week ahead folks. The world cup fever will take some time to wash away. Stay healthy and happy

Was very disappointed with the Freach team. Their game was a far cry from their earlier ones. First half was almost one sided in favour of Argentina. They played a better game throughout. Their passes were simply brilliant. Nonetheless, the match had its moments of brilliance and was full of high drama and suspense.
I have not seen the movie. Balraj Sahni was my favourite actor. Did not know that the film was so highly appreciated in Cannes.
