Couroupita guianensis is planted as an ornamental plant for its showy, scented flowers, and as a botanical specimen for its interesting fruit. The fruit is edible but has a strong, unpleasant odour. The tree is called the Cannonball tree and has come to India from Central and South America. It has been used medicinally as well. Sighting a tree from afar is a treat to the eyes as the tall, thick trunk is full of hundreds of these flowers.
